pêgê tou Iakôb (Jacob's well)

In the four Gospels, Jacob’s well (in Greek: pêgê tou Iakôb; Vietnamese: Giếng Gia-cóp; French: le puits de Jacob) appears 1 time in Jn 4:6. The narrator describes Jesus’ journey in Jn 4:3-6: “3 He [Jesus] left Judea and departed again to Galilee. 4 He had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and so Jesus, wearied as he was with his journey, sat down beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.”

Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal

The name of the two mountains: Gerizim and Ebal does not appear in the four Gospels. But Mount Gerizim was told (1 time) in Jn 4:20. The Samaritan woman said to Jesus at the Jacob’s well: “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship” (4:20). 

Sukha (Sychar)

In the four Gospels, Sychar (in Greek: Sukha; Vietnamese: Xy-kha; French: Sychar) appears 1 time in Jn 4:5. The town of Sychar is described in the Gospel of John like this: “He [Jesus] came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there” (4:5-6a). Jerome identifies Sychar with Shechem. In fact, in Syriac manuscripts the word “Shechem” is used for “Sychar”, but this identification was probably corrected by a later copyist. Majority of manuscripts wrote “Sychar”. Where exactly are Sychar town?

Samareia (region of Samaria) in the Gospel of John

Samaria region (in Greek: Samareia; Vietnamese: Sa-ma-ri; French: Samarie) appears 3 times in the Gospel of John (Jn 4:4,5,7). The narrator cites three regions: Judea, Samaria and Galilee in Jn 4:3-4: “3 He [Jesus] left Judea and departed again to Galilee. 4 He had to pass through Samaria.”
